Yevhen Puhachov lost both legs in the war. Today, he is adapting to a new stage of life and preparing for prosthetic rehabilitation. It is for this reason that, on May 16\u201317, thousands of people will gather in central Kyiv for the charity <\/span>MHP Run4Victory Kyiv Marathon<\/b>.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n

Yevhen was born in Berdiansk and later moved to Kyiv. Before the war, he worked in passenger transportation, dedicating most of his time to his job. He now reflects that there was little room left for life beyond work.<\/span><\/p>\n

His only hobby was hockey. Although there were no local teams in his hometown, he would find opportunities to get on the ice whenever possible \u2014 especially when the sea froze over. He recalls being a strong skater and still remembers the feeling of movement.<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2023, at the age of 51, Yevhen joined the Armed Forces of Ukraine. He served in the 44th Separate Mechanized Brigade, in a medical unit, working as a driver and evacuating wounded soldiers from the frontline. He served in the Kharkiv direction and later in Donetsk after rotation.<\/span><\/p>\n

He was injured near Kostiantynivka when his group hit a mine. Two of his comrades were killed instantly, while Yevhen sustained severe injuries. What followed was a long evacuation, stabilization points, and intensive care \u2014 a period he barely remembers.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI had to relearn how to sit, then how to swim. Without legs, everything is different. I started with basic physical activity and am still regaining control over my body. It brings me closer to my goal \u2014 living independently,\u201d says the veteran. \u201cNow I\u2019m learning to play para hockey.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

To support Yevhen\u2019s recovery, the charity <\/span>MHP Run4Victory Kyiv Marathon<\/b> will take place in central Kyiv on May 16\u201317. For the first time since the beginning of Russia\u2019s full-scale war against Ukraine, the city\u2019s central streets will reopen for a large-scale running event.<\/span><\/p>\n

100% of registration fees and donations will be directed to prosthetic care through the Protez Foundation<\/b>, where Yevhen will undergo rehabilitation. He is one of the veterans whose recovery can become possible thanks to this support.<\/span><\/p>\n
