Yevhen was born in Berdiansk and later moved to Kyiv. Before the war, he worked in passenger transportation, dedicating most of his time to his job. He now reflects that there was little room left for life beyond work.

His only hobby was hockey. Although there were no local teams in his hometown, he would find opportunities to get on the ice whenever possible — especially when the sea froze over. He recalls being a strong skater and still remembers the feeling of movement.
In 2023, at the age of 51, Yevhen joined the Armed Forces of Ukraine. He served in the 44th Separate Mechanized Brigade, in a medical unit, working as a driver and evacuating wounded soldiers from the frontline. He served in the Kharkiv direction and later in Donetsk after rotation.
He was injured near Kostiantynivka when his group hit a mine. Two of his comrades were killed instantly, while Yevhen sustained severe injuries. What followed was a long evacuation, stabilization points, and intensive care — a period he barely remembers.

“I had to relearn how to sit, then how to swim. Without legs, everything is different. I started with basic physical activity and am still regaining control over my body. It brings me closer to my goal — living independently,” says the veteran. “Now I’m learning to play para hockey.”
To support Yevhen’s recovery, the charity MHP Run4Victory Kyiv Marathon will take place in central Kyiv on May 16–17. For the first time since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine, the city’s central streets will reopen for a large-scale running event.
100% of registration fees and donations will be directed to prosthetic care through the Protez Foundation, where Yevhen will undergo rehabilitation. He is one of the veterans whose recovery can become possible thanks to this support.

“MHP Run4Victory is about people coming together around recovery. We want as many veterans as possible to regain the opportunity to return to active life. Every registration and every donation directly contributes to prosthetic care for Ukrainian veterans. Stories like Yevhen’s show how critical this support is,” said Pavlo Moroz, Director of Corporate Social Responsibility at MHP.
Corporate teams of 10+ participants receive a 15% discount (info@newrun.com.ua). Participation is free for children, military personnel, veterans, and people with disabilities (registration via info@newrun.com.ua).
Taking part in the run is a simple step that directly contributes to Yevhen’s recovery. And perhaps your step will help him take his next — already on a prosthetic.
