6 bedrooms, a shelter, and gas heating: the keys to a new home were presented to a family-type orphanage in the Kyiv region

24 july 2024,

The family of Nataliia and Viktor Shevchenko received the keys to their new home in Myronivka, Kyiv region. Nataliia and Viktor adopted 6 foster children. The family expects new members — several more children will join them soon. The house was built in September 2023 from scratch.

Since 2023, the Olena Zelenska Foundation has been implementing the “Room for Childhood” project, within which housing for large foster families is built. The project objective is to build homes for families who lost theirs following the full-scale invasion.

Kyiv Regional Military Administration and its head, Ruslan Kravchenko decided to scale the “Room for Childhood” Foundation’s project up to the Kyiv region by calling on the donors to join the initiative.

“The Foundation has already built houses for two families in our region. In particular, it is the Yaroslavtsevy family-type orphanage from the Zaporizhzhia region and the Umansky one from the Kherson region. We are currently looking into the possibility of building a house for another family. Nowadays, due to the synergy of the Olena Zelenska Foundation, the Kyiv Regional Administration, and MHP, the Shevchenko family’s dream of a comfortable home for their growing family has come true. I am happy that responsible businesses of the Kyiv region respond and help both with such projects and with the support for the military,” said Ruslan Kravchenko, head of the Kyiv Regional Military Administration.

Myronivka Town Council supported the construction of a house for the Shevchenko family. MHP-Gromadi Charitable Foundation supported the project financially. The strategic partner of the MHP-Gromadi Charitable Foundation is the MHP International Company.

“People who give shelter and a family to children deprived of parental care during a full-scale war are our real heroes. For me, the Shevchenko family from Myronivka is just like that, as they raise 6 children and plan to adopt 3 more. Children need a home — their power spot. We all know and realize the value of our common home and have been defending it for 10 years already. Thus, MHP joined this large-scale project without hesitation and gave children and this family a reliable power and support spot,” emphasizes Yuriy Kosyuk, MHP founder and chief executive officer.

The basis is a typical construction project of a house for a large foster family, which is being built within the “Room for Childhood” project by the Olena Zelenska Foundation.

“Large foster families, where dad and mom raise 5–10 orphans and children deprived of parental care, are one of the main beneficiaries of the Foundation since its establishment. The “Room for Childhood” project for such families was launched in 2023. One of their biggest needs is a home. As of today, the Foundation has already built the first 14 houses, and we continue to develop this project so that all families who lost their homes due to the war get a new “Room for Childhood.” I am especially grateful to the partners who are currently scaling this effort up. And today I was very happy to see the actual result of such cooperation,” says Nina Horbachova, director of the Olena Zelenska Foundation.

The construction works included the following:

– preparation of the land plot and ditch for foundation with engineering communications: gas, heat, electricity, water, and Internet networks;

– construction of the foundation, walls, shelter, slabs, and roof;

– finishing works;

– installation of furniture, sanitary ware, kitchen equipment, and inventory;

– arrangement of the adjacent territory and children’s sports ground.

The area of the new building is almost 500 sq. m., namely, the living area is 250 sq. m., an underground shelter — 46.6 sq. m. The house has 6 bedrooms, 1 kitchen, and 1 common room. The building was primarily designed and built as an inclusive space. There are no thresholds or stairs here. There is a wheelchair entrance from the yard. All doors are 90 cm wide to accommodate a wheelchair.

For their convenience, the large Shevchenko family also received a car to get to the formal opening of the house.
