It won’t be like before? What Hinders IDPs from Integrating into New Communities?

11 august 2023

October 2022 It marks the eighth month of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The town square of Ladyzhyn, Vinnytsia region, is buzzing with people. In a few moments, locals, IDPs, and soldiers will join voices with KOZAK SYSTEM band to sing Ukrainian songs. These street concerts, part of the nationwide tour “Singing for Victory”, are held in various Ukrainian cities. Such initiatives not only uplift spirits and inspire, but also foster the integration of IDPs into small towns, like Ladyzhyn, which alone hosts over 3,000 IDPs.

Cultural events are just one piece of the puzzle that helps forge social bonds among IDPs in communities. However, for a systematic approach, it’s crucial to understand the factors that impede this process. That’s why we, in collaboration with CSO Horizon of Change and our foundation, conducted a study on the integration of IDPs in Ukraine and abroad. The study revealed that the obstacles to adaptation include the longing to return to their previous life, the communities’ lack of understanding of the new opportunities brought by the influx of people into the regions, and language barriers.
